Banfi’s story begins in 1978 when two Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani bought a magnificent estate in Montalcino with the strong will to produce a great wine in a great territory. The investment was huge, as a result one of the most important winery of Italy was created with an extension of about 2800 hectares of property, 1000 of which planted as vineyards. In the early 80’s the company undertook an important research work together with the University of Milan regarding the study of Sangiovese clones in the company, identifying about 650 of them. Afterwards they studied which ones among them could better adapt to the specific soil conditions and which wine results they could provide. Today thanks to this study each vineyard is planted using 4 selected clones chosen by the research results based on the soil characteristics. During the years the Mariani brothers have decided to invest in other important areas of Italian oenology, such as Bolgheri, the Classical Chianti and Piedmont.
