Ruffino was founded in 1877 when two cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino created a small winery in Pontassieve of producing good pleasant and clean wines so as to embrace the taste of consumers and begun to grow their business. Ruffino wines were internationally highly appreciated in fact Ruffino's reputation continued to grow. According to that Ruffino was the first Chianti producre that exported in United States. After the end of the Second World War Ruffino started an expansion and strong investment process that led to purchase new estates. The first estate to be acquired was the Montemasso Castle, in Chianti Classico. Ruffino continued to invest up to reach its current size. Ruffino counts on approximately 450 hectares of vineyards in 6 estates located in great quality and prestige areas within the Chianti denominations, Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino producing about 20 million bottles.
