Biondi Santi is the forefather of the Brunello di Montalcino wine. Ferruccio Biondi Santi was the first in Montalcino to make wine using 100% Sangiovese grape clones without blending with other international varieties. Since the first half of the 19th century, a certain Clemente Santi grew the grapes on the Montalcino hills winning awards in wine fairs for the incredible quality of his wines. The story began when Caterina Santi married Jacopo Biondi and they had Ferruccio Biondi Santi. Back in Montalcino, after fighting with Garibaldi's troops, Ferruccio started make experiments on the Sangiovese grapes, selecting the Brunello clone, and in 1870 he created a full-bodied, elegant and deep coloured wine. The story has continued until and today Biondi Santi is a mythical brand of Italian wine in the world. It has 25 hectares of vineyards for a production of around 80,000 bottles a year, included the 10,000 bottles of Riserva (only in exceptional harvests).
