Vini Franciacorta DOCG

The Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin 'Franciacorta' is reserved exclusively for wine obtained by refermentation in the bottle and separation of the deposit by disgorging. It is a sparkling wine with a minimum of 18 months of ageing on the lees.

In order to be eligible for the OCG designation, the wine must meet the characteristics described in the product specification to distinguish it from other wines.

The method described in the specifications is established by the Franciacorta Wine Consortium; the regulations are the most restrictive in the world for the production of Metodo classico. Only through these regulations is the absolute quality of the product guaranteed.

The main characteristic of Franciacorta is the obligatory minimum period of bottle ageing on the lees, which differs for each type. Without this characteristic, the wine cannot belong to the Franciacorta appellation.

Best Franciacorta

The types of Franciacorta allowed by the specification are:

  • Franciacorta Brut
  • Saten
  • Rosè
  • vintage
  • Riserva

The most prestigious wines are undoubtedly the Millesimato and the Riserva because of the grape varieties used and the production rules imposed by the regulations.

Let's take a look at the qualities of each type.

Franciacorta brut

La preparazione del vino base si può ottenere da una mescolanza di vini di annate diverse; purché si rispetti i requisiti previsti dal presente disciplinare. Le diverse varietà di uva vinificate devono essere registrate separatamente negli appositi registri.
.

Vintage

Vintage and Reserve Franciacorta wines must be made from a minimum of 85% of the wine of the reference vintage. They are only produced in the best vintages.

Franciacorta Satèn

For the Satèn type, a maximum of 20 g of sugar per litre must be used at the time of frothing. Only white grapes such as chardonnay are permitted for production. The perlage is fine and creamy

Characteristics of Franciacorta

Wines under the DOCG Franciacorta appellation must begin a compulsory minimum period of ageing on the lees; the period starts from the date of bottling and goes up to disgorgement.

The specifications indicate the months of ageing for each type:

  • Base: a minimum period of 18 months;
  • Rosé and Satèn: 24 months for Franciacorta Rosé and for Satèn;
  • vintage, vintage Rosé, vintage Satèn: all vintage wines must respect a minimum of 30 months of ageing;
  • Riserva: the Riserva must respect 60 months of ageing.

Harvesting of the grapes used for this precious wine from Lombardy begins around mid-August and must be carried out exclusively by hand, following the ripening time of the selected vines.

Organoleptic characteristics

This sparkling wine from Lombardy is considered the Italian Champagne and is recognised internationally. High-quality bottles can reach very high levels of quality, especially the Riserva types.

The appearance of the basic DOCG wine should be straw yellow with golden reflections. The fruity bouquet immediately envelops with notes of white-fleshed fruit and dried fruit; while the flavour is balanced, with the right combination of freshness, savouriness and fruity floral hints; with hints of yeast and delicate citrus nuances.

The Satèn, on the other hand, has aromas of ripe fruit and flowers, with hints of almonds and hazelnuts. The freshness of the Satèn is typical of Franciacorta, with a rich savouriness. In addition to the flavour of fresh fruit, the satèn evokes pleasant hints of vanilla.

The Rosé has a particularly intense pink colour. It is immediately recognisable by the aroma of wild strawberries, currants and raspberries typical of Pinot Noir. The taste is structured with distinct notes of red fruits.

The taste profile of the vintage wines reflects the climatic characteristics of the year and the qualitative expressions of the grapes and harvest.

The Riserva wines are straw to golden in colour, with fine, persistent bubbles. The bouquet is fruity and fine and the palate is savoury and harmonious in its fruity notes.
